|HOW IT SUPPORTS AND PROTECTSMelcare’s Derma Care™ has been designed to help support the skin’s natural protective barrier.
Healthy skin has an acidic protective layer known as the acid mantel (Fig 1). The acid mantle is a zone that extends from the skins surface and into the first layer of the epidermis (Stratum corneum). Damaged can occur to the acid mantle through excessive washing, prolonged exposure to moisture (urine, wound fluids), mechanical action or changes due to the bodies natural hormonal cycles. Once the acid mantle is damaged, the skin is exposed to microbes and environmental allergens that may result in dermatitis, eczema, infection and other conditions. Loss of the acid mantel also adversely impacts the effectiveness of skins protective oils (sebum), further reducing natural defences.
Honey has a long history of use in skin care. The Leptospermum sp honey in Derma Care™ contains a natural polyhydroxy acid (PHA) that helps maintain the skins protective acidic barrier. Derma Care™ also contains Jojoba oil which is unique in its similarity to the skin’s natural oils. These oils contribute to protecting the skin and limiting moisture transfer. Other ingredients in Derma Care provide antioxidant properties and stability for ease of use.
Products feature a tamper evident seal for your protection. To open, unscrew cap, remove security seal. Do not use if seal is broken.
LEPTOSPERMUM SP HONEY (MANUKA)
Melcare’s Derma Care™ contains 25% Leptospermum sp. medical honey and other natural ingredients. Biomedical research has shown that some of the properties of honey produced from Leptospermum sp are more stable than honey from any other plant. It is also the most cited honey in clinical research. The genus of Leptospermum, of which there are 86 species, is believed to have originated on the East Coast of Australia and subsequently dispersed to New Zealand (1), New Guinea and South East Asia (4)1. Of the 86 species, 81 are endemic to Australia. Honey from Leptospermum is often referred to as Manuka or Jellybush because of its unique thixotropic (jell like) properties.
The honey used conforms to the British Pharmacopeia (BP) monograph for honey, is minimally heat treated to preserve its natural properties. Derma Care is suitable for babies as the honey is treated to destroy bacterial spores.
